HIV testing in Dubai: which test, when to take it, and what it costs

There are two different HIV tests, they detect different things at different times, and choosing the wrong one is the most common reason a result doesn’t answer the question. This explains which is which.

The two tests, and what separates them

Nearly every HIV test offered in Dubai is one of two kinds.

A 4th-generation test is a blood test looking for two things at once: antibodies your immune system makes in response to HIV, and the p24 antigen, a viral protein that appears earlier than antibodies do. Looking for both is what makes it fourth-generation, and it is the standard screening test almost everywhere.

An RNA or PCR test looks for the virus itself rather than your body’s response to it. That lets it detect infection earlier, and it exists for one situation in particular: a recent, specific exposure where waiting weeks for an antibody test is not tolerable.

For most people the 4th-generation test is the right one. The RNA test is not a better version of it — it is a different tool for a narrower problem, and it costs considerably more.

How long to wait after exposure

Every test has a window period: the gap between exposure and the point the test can reliably detect infection. Test inside that window and a negative result does not mean much, which is the single most important thing to understand before booking.

These ranges reflect published guidance from recognised public-health bodies, including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the UK NHS. They vary between individuals and between the specific assays a laboratory runs, so treat them as orientation rather than a rule. If the timing of a result will change what you do next, confirm it with a doctor before booking.

The practical version: if the exposure was more than six weeks ago, a 4th-generation test is straightforward. If it was in the last fortnight, either wait, or use an RNA test and understand that it is answering a narrower question. Window periods for other infections are covered in our full guide.

What “conclusive” actually means

You will see 90 days quoted often. It is the point at which guidance commonly treats a negative 4th-generation result as conclusive — not the point at which the test starts working. Most infections are detectable well before then, which is why the window is given as a range starting around 18 days rather than as a single number.

Retesting is sometimes advised where an exposure was recent and the first result was negative. Whether that applies to a particular situation is a clinical judgement, and one for a doctor rather than for us.

Two things worth knowing before choosing on price alone. HIV rarely travels alone as a concern — if the worry is a specific exposure rather than HIV specifically, a blood panel covering syphilis and hepatitis costs less than testing for each separately later. And the RNA test is priced the way it is because it is a different, more involved assay, not because it is a premium version of the standard one.

At home, or at the laboratory

Both produce the same result from the same laboratory. The difference is entirely convenience and privacy.

Home collection means a qualified nurse comes to you — no waiting room, no reception desk, no explaining why you are there. It is included at no extra cost on every screen from AED 449 upwards. On the AED 99 HIV Screen, home collection is AED 100, because the visit costs more than the test does.

A lab visit takes about fifteen minutes, and the blood draw itself under five. Our partner laboratory is on Sheikh Zayed Road and is open around the clock; you receive the address when you book.

How results reach you

Results for the 4th-generation test are usually ready within 24 hours. The RNA test is a specialist assay and takes approximately one week.

They are issued by the laboratory and sent directly to you. Fio never receives, stores or has access to your results — that is not a policy we apply, it is a path your data does not take. If a result needs discussing, a doctor at the partner laboratory contacts you privately, and a consultation is included with every booking at no additional cost.

How confidential it is

Nothing we send names the test. Not the payment description on your bank statement, which shows a neutral company name; not the confirmation email’s subject line; not the booking reference; not any reminder. A notification preview is readable by anyone standing near your phone, and that is the whole reason.
