STD testing for women in Dubai
For women, a full STD test in Dubai needs a urine sample, plus a small blood sample if you want HIV, syphilis and hepatitis covered. There is no swab, no speculum and no examination. Fio Health arranges it at a partner laboratory or with a nurse at your home, hotel or office, from AED 449 with home collection included, and most results come directly to you within 24 hours.
The more important point: infections that cause no symptoms are, if anything, more common in women, so feeling well is not a reason to skip a test.
What does an STD test for women involve?
A urine sample for the infections tested by PCR, such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomonas and mycoplasma, and a small blood sample for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C. You provide the urine sample yourself in private. There is no internal examination and no swab.
The one piece of preparation: try not to urinate for at least one hour before the sample. A dilute sample is the most common reason a test has to be repeated. You can still give a urine sample during your period.
You can do it in two ways. Visit the partner laboratory, which is open 24 hours, or book a nurse to come to your home, hotel or office in Dubai. The visit takes a few minutes, and both samples go to the same DHA-licensed, CAP-accredited laboratory. How the nurse visit works is covered in our guide to home testing.
Which infections can women have without symptoms?
Most of the common ones. Public-health bodies including the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the UK NHS describe these as frequently symptomless in women:
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea: often produce nothing noticeable. Left untreated, both can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which is why guidance recommends testing after exposure rather than waiting for symptoms.
- Trichomonas and Mycoplasma genitalium: often asymptomatic, or mild enough to be put down to something else.
- HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C: can go unnoticed for long periods, which is why they're tested from a blood sample rather than looked for.
The practical conclusion is the same for all of them: testing is prompted by exposure, such as a new partner, sex without a condom, or a partner who has tested positive, not by how you feel.
If you do have symptoms, see a doctor rather than booking a screen. A test tells you what is there; it doesn't treat it. Our page on STD symptoms explains why symptoms are a poor guide either way.
Which test should a woman choose?
It depends on what you want answered. The screens are the same for women and men; what differs is which question you're asking.
| If you want | Screen | Sample | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| HIV only | Fio HIV Screen | Blood | AED 99 |
| The common bacterial infections, urine only | Fio Essential Screen (7) | Urine | AED 449 |
| HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B and C | Fio Blood Screen (4) | Blood | AED 649 |
| A wider urine panel, including herpes and syphilis by PCR | Fio Advanced Screen (14) | Urine | AED 749 |
| Urine and blood together: the usual full check | Fio Complete Screen (20) | Urine + blood | AED 999 |
| The widest panel offered | Fio Premium Screen (32) | Urine + blood | AED 1,449 |
For most women after a new partner, the Complete Screen is the one that answers the whole question in a single visit: the common urine infections plus HIV, syphilis and hepatitis. Every pathogen in every screen is listed on our tests page, and the costs are compared in our price guide.
The Advanced, Complete and Premium screens also test for Candida and Gardnerella vaginalis, organisms linked with thrush and bacterial vaginosis. These are common and are not classed as sexually transmitted infections, but they are included because they're found in the same sample.
Book in about two minutes
Choose a screen, pick a nurse visit or the lab, and pay online. Results come to you directly from the laboratory.
When should you test after exposure?
Urine tests can be taken from 7 days after exposure, and most blood tests from 30 days. If a recent exposure to HIV is the specific worry, an HIV RNA test detects the virus from around 10 days.
A negative result becomes reliable a little later for each infection. Enter your date in the window-period calculator to see your own dates for each test.
What isn't covered by a screening test?
- Cervical screening (HPV and smear tests). This is a separate test, taken by a doctor or nurse at a clinic, and it is not part of an STD screen. Fio's screens do not include HPV, so keep up with cervical screening separately.
- Sores, rashes or anything you can see. These need a doctor to examine them. Our guide to clinic, laboratory or home testing covers when a clinic is the better choice.
- Treatment. A screening test gives you a result, not a prescription. If a result is positive, the laboratory's own clinician contacts you about the next steps.
How private is it?
Your results go from the laboratory directly to you. Fio never receives or stores them. Your card statement shows a neutral company name, never the test, and a nurse visit looks like any other delivery or appointment. If you and a partner both want testing, you can book together: one visit, 10% off both tests, and each person's results go only to their own email. More on this in our privacy section.
